How Do You Become a More Engaged Parent

As a parent, you are the first and most important adult in your child’s life. Your relationship with them impacts their behavior, thinking, perception, and future relationships. We understand how difficult parenting can be; that’s why we’ve curated a list of things you can do to become a more engaging and supportive parent.

Active listening and regular conversations

Actively listening to your child is a great way to improve your relationship with them. It helps reduce any communication gaps and creates a level of trust. Practice active listening by giving your child complete attention when they’re trying to have a conversation.

You can even go ahead and turn off electronic devices during dinner, so your kids have all your attention. Listen and try to understand what they’re sharing; this is vital if you want them to be open and honest with you.

Consistency is key

To build a healthy and caring home environment, you have to stay reliable and consistent. If you made plans with your kids, follow through with them. Don’t brush them off because they are kids and likely won’t remember.

Our kids need to know they can rely on us to keep our word and be consistent. Set expectations and commit to them when it comes to rules and boundaries.

Schedule time together

To build a bond with your child, schedule some time together where you both can enjoy some activities together. Whether it’s by reading together, playing with them, or going out, spending quality time with your children is essential.

Ask your kids what games they want to play or where they want to go for family time. Take an interest in their suggestions and enjoy the time you spend with them. These might seem like minute activities to you, but your child will feel understood and confident when voicing their opinions and suggestions.

Positive reinforcements go a long way

Positive reinforcement is a form of discipline that focuses on our child’s strengths, positive traits, and interests. It’s an opportunity for you to effectively communicate and empower your child to focus on these positives too.

If your child misbehaves, you might be inclined to discipline them the old fashion way but remember how that made you feel as a kid. Positive reinforcements rely heavily on your ability to stay calm and avoid conflict. Be selective when it comes to punishments and time-outs. Apologize when you’re in the wrong and utilize humor to distract and diffuse the situation.

At Centerra Ranch Montessori School, we are a family-oriented preschool, hoping to educate your children and you about nurturing and caring parent-child relationships. We offer our services for infants, toddlers, and pre-primary students.
