Getting Involved in the Preschool Learning Journey

What is the best way to support your kid while they’re in montessori preschool? Differing schools of thought will all offer different strategies and techniques. We believe that it depends on the child and their parents how their relationship will work.

Preschool is a period where every tiny human learns for themselves how to performs basic tasks and explores different types of experiences. Supporting them means being in tune with what they need.

Ease Your Kid into Independence

Parents often have trouble letting their kids do things on their own. Preschool learning goals revolve around basic academic skills, but also life skills which is why you should let your kid do simple tasks like putting their jacket and shoes on by themselves. Kids are trained to put away their belongings, eat independently and be self-sufficient in many ways, and you should be encouraging the process.

You can figure out where to step in and where to let them do it by simply talking to them. Ask them whether they know how to do something and let them take over. If you know your child has learned to do something at school but resists it at home, you can appeal to their sense of pride by letting them know you trust them to do a task.

Encourage Teamwork and Collaboration

Our preschool syllabus also includes helping your kids be better team players and communicators. That’s why any action you do that encourages collaboration will help your kid. Next time you’re doing something simple, like cooking breakfast, you can ask for help laying the table or watching for the toast as long as your kid is old enough to handle it.

This allows children to establish a sense of comfort with working around and with other people on projects or tasks.

Talk to Your Kids About School

Communication patterns are the best way to understand how your kid feels about school. Ask them what they learned that day, and maybe even request that they show you what they did at school once you get home.

Checking in with your kids’ feelings and emotions on learning, the environment, other kids and the teachers helps you stay in tune with your child’s needs and enables a space where your kid can talk to you about school.

Keep in Touch with Teachers

A healthy partnership with your child’s preschool can give you extra perspective on how they’re doing. Teachers should be able to express any concerns they have, as well as let you know where there have been improvements with your child’s progress.

Our teachers at Centerra Ranch Montessori School encourage parents to keep in touch and talk with them about how their kids are doing. The goal at our Katy, TX montessori preschool is to create the best possible opportunities to learn for our young minds, which is what our steadfast teacher-parent partnership enables.
