1. They Aren’t Toilet Trained Yet
While most children are fully potty trained by the age of 3 or 4, some aren’t. Accidents happen and some preschools tell parents to send an extra pair of clothes just in case. However, other preschools aren’t open to such situations and only accept potty-trained children.
If you want to send your child to a preschool with such a policy, start training them in the summer. Once they can use the toilet independently and you no longer have to worry about mishaps, they’re good to go.
2. They Have Separation Anxiety
It’s completely normal for children to feel anxious after being separated from their parents. Many children cry or try to run away from people they’re unfamiliar with. It’s an expected response to a new situation in such young children.
However, this is an issue that we can resolve within a couple of weeks. Stay with your child for a while before saying goodbye to them. Reassure them that they’ll be okay and you’ll be there with them soon. Develop a relationship with their educators so that you can show your child that they can trust them.
You can even hire a babysitter a couple of weeks before sending your child off to preschool. This can help them become comfortable with other caregivers. Eventually, they’ll stop being so upset when you leave them in someone else’s care.
3. They’re Unable To Communicate Properly
Communication is an important skill to teach while preparing your child for preschool. Are you able to understand your child easily? Does your child have difficulty communicating with you or other people? These are questions you must ask yourself before deciding to send your child to preschool.
If your child can’t communicate clearly, it will be difficult for them to get along with their teachers and peers. In fact, this inability could pose a health and safety risk too. You would want your child to be able to inform their teacher properly in case of any sickness or emergency.
4. They Are still Learning to Follow Simple Instructions
Is your child able to follow one-step or two-step instructions? Are they able to comply when asked to “wear their shoes” or “throw the empty wrapper in the bin”? If not, that’s a sign your child is not ready for preschool yet.
Practice teaching them how to follow simple instructions at home daily. Encouraging them to listen to you can positively reinforce their behavior. For example, each time they organise their toys after you ask them to, award them with a hand-drawn star on their hands. This will help them understand how to follow instructions.
